AFTER INFORMING a thrilled Cindy Brady that her estranged son had agreed to return to Carson to see her, Darbi Macon took a moment to place a quick phone call to her own son, doing so with mixed feelings.

On one hand, she understood—and supported—what Zander was trying to do, but on the other hand, Darbi worried that Zander’s actions would only serve to reopen old wounds and cause good people more pain and suffering. Was it really worth it? Darbi had her doubts. But she knew Zander was digging his heels in. He had come home to do some much-needed healing, but he had decided what was really needed was a project, and for him, that project could only be one thing: finally finding the person responsible for Monica Brady’s mysterious abduction and brutal murder.

“I was friends with her, Mom. She was the first person I came out to. And she was beyond wonderful and supportive, and it drives me crazy when I think about how she died and how no one was ever punished.”

“I understand that, son, but it’s been eighteen years since Monica died, and the police were never able to find anything. It seems unlikely that you will find something now, after so many years have passed.”

Zander had admitted the odds were against him, but he also admitted he worked best when his back was to the wall, and investigative journalism was his specialty. He was a freelancer working for various outlets, including TIME Magazine, Newsweek, National Geographic, and a half dozen publications in between. Most recently, he had been in Iraq, covering an important story for TIME, when he was injured by a roadside bomb that killed three soldiers and left Zander seriously wounded. He tried to play it down. He tried to assure everyone he was fine, but Darbi knew his knee caused him almost constant pain, and despite Zander’s best efforts, he couldn’t hide that he wasn’t sleeping much as a result of said pain and lingering nightmares… but he flat-out refused to talk to a professional.

Instead, he had decided to launch his own, personal investigation into Monica Brady’s long unsolved murder.

As expected, Zander was pleased by the news that Jasper had agreed to come home to see his mother.

Talking to Cindy about Monica was out of the question—Darbi had made that clear—but Zander figured he could have a chat or two with Jasper, see if he remembered anything useful about his sister’s disappearance.

“Just play things carefully, Zander,” Darbi advised. “I don’t know all the history when it comes to Jasper, but from talking to him, I get the impression that his family might be something of a touchy subject.”

“I won’t push, Mom, I promise. I just want to talk to the guy. If he tells me to back off, I’ll back off.”

“I’m still worried. And not just about Jasper and Cindy. I know you’re already asking a lot of questions around town.”

“That’s the only way to get answers. I need information. I’ve got a request in to the police to allow me a look at the case file.
